Brugge

Brugge is stunning. Like some of my favorite Dutch towns, it's a twisty network of cobblestone streets sprinkled with canals and squares. It exemplifies one of my favorite books (and the origin of the name of this blog), The Timeless Way of Building. In a nutshell it discusses how architecture can have a nameless quality that makes a place feel alive. The buildings in Brugge were tweaked over the centuries as needs required until everything just fits. There's a Dutch word I love, "gezellig", that means roughly cozy or quaint, a place that just feels right. Brugge is like that.

Dinner was Belgian specialities. I had the river eel with spinach and onions. Others had rich Belgian stew. My waffle for desert was like an entirely different substance from any I'd ever had - crisp on the outside and light as air on the inside.

A few sites around Brugge. Would be a great town to tour by bike.

David took this reflection shot in the water. Looks like an impressionist painting.
Our hotel was the first building on the right

And for those at home I did get in a little shopping, you'll be glad to know.
